Papy Mendy has completed his move to Ligue 2 club Metz after being released by Watford this summer. The Senegalese midfielder spent just 10 months at Vicarage Road, featuring 26 times before his contract was not extended. Watford finished 16th in the Championship last season with 57 points, 14 wins, 15 draws and 17 losses, ending the campaign on a five-game losing streak.
What happened at Watford?
Mendy arrived at Watford in September 2025 but struggled to hold down a regular starting spot. He fell out of favour under manager Javi Gracia midway through the season, failing to start a single league match. However, he was given more opportunities by interim bosses Paulo Pezzolano and Ed Still before his form dipped towards the end of the campaign.
Why Metz?
The 31-year-old has now returned to France, where he has spent the majority of his career. Metz, who were relegated from Ligue 1 last season with just 17 points, are known for their yo-yo status between France's top two divisions. Mendy has signed a two-year deal with the club, aiming to help them secure an immediate return to the top flight.
What's next for Watford?
With Mendy's departure, Watford will look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new Championship season. Their next fixture is an away trip to Burnley on February 27, 2027. The Hornets will be aiming to improve on last season's 16th-place finish and avoid another late-season slump.
