Watford have completed the signing of defender Soumaila Coulibaly on a season-long loan from French club Strasbourg. The 22-year-old centre-back arrives on transfer deadline day to bolster manager Alessio Dionisi's defensive ranks.
Coulibaly's move provides immediate competition for places alongside Mattie Pollock and Kevin Keben. The club had been actively seeking at least two central defenders before the window closed. Earlier on Tuesday, Watford also secured the loan signing of Branimir Mlacic, making it a double defensive addition.
Soumaila Coulibaly arrives with a pedigree developed at Paris Saint-Germain's academy before a three-year spell with Borussia Dortmund between 2022 and 2025. He joined Strasbourg last summer and was immediately loaned to Brest for the 2025/26 campaign. During that loan, he made 16 appearances in Ligue 1, gaining valuable top-flight experience.
His signing addresses a clear need for Watford, who sit 13th in the Championship table with five points from four games. Their record shows one win, two draws, and one loss, with a recent form sequence of loss, draw, draw, win. The team has scored four goals while conceding five, resulting in a minus one goal difference.
Manager Alessio Dionisi identified central defence as a priority area needing reinforcement. Talks for other targets, including Jamaal Lascelles and Teden Mengi, were deemed unlikely to reach a positive conclusion. Coulibaly emerged as a viable alternative who was also linked with Championship rivals West Brom and Swansea City. Discussions with Swansea broke down, paving the way for Watford's successful move.
The player himself was keen on the switch. "When I heard Watford were interested I said to my agent I wanted to go there, I did not hesitate," Coulibaly said. The double defensive signing of Coulibaly and Mlacic provides key depth for a demanding Championship schedule. Watford currently trail league leaders Swansea by five points in the early title race.
