Watford have confirmed the departures of three young players as the summer transfer window closed, with Michael Adu-Poku moving on loan and Kiefer Gorman leaving permanently. The exits follow the club's recent decision to downgrade its academy and continue a reshaping of its youth setup.
Adu-Poku, who is in the final year of his contract at Vicarage Road, has joined League Two side Newport County on a season-long loan. The 20-year-old had been involved in every matchday squad for Watford's first four Championship games this season, coming on as a substitute against Southampton and starting in the Carabao Cup tie at Peterborough. His move is seen as a chance to earn regular minutes and potentially secure a new deal with the Hornets. Watford currently sit 14th in the Championship with five points from four games, having scored four goals and conceded five.
Midfielder Kiefer Gorman, aged 17, has left Watford on a permanent basis to join Brentford B. The Premier League club's development squad confirmed the signing, stating they were "thrilled" to complete the deal. "Brentford B is thrilled to confirm the signing of midfielder Kiefer Gorman from Watford on a permanent deal, subject to EFL, FA and Premier League approval," a club statement said. They added, "Welcome to west London, Kiefer." Watford received a compensation fee of £50,000 for the youngster, who signed a three-year contract with his new club.
Winger Zavier Massiah-Edwards is the third youngster to depart. He was involved in first-team pre-season preparations but did not feature in any competitive matchday squads under head coach Gianfranco Zola this campaign. The 19-year-old made all five of his senior appearances for Watford under former caretaker boss Tom Cleverley across the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.
These moves follow the earlier exit of Head of Academy Amar Sanghrajka and the club's significant summer decision to scrap the Under-21s side and downgrade the academy to Category Three status. The hierarchy concluded the setup was not producing enough first-team talent to justify its previous level of investment. This strategic shift is now manifesting in player movement, with the club five points behind early league leaders Swansea City.
Attention now turns fully to the Championship campaign and this weekend's home fixture against Preston North End. Preston arrive at Vicarage Road on Tuesday, September 8, sitting 24th in the table. The Hornets will be aiming to build on their recent form of loss, draw, draw, win and improve their league position from 14th. The first-team squad details are available on our squad page.
