Charlie Daniels has been appointed head coach of Fulham's Under-21s, returning to the game after leaving Watford at the end of last season. The former Watford interim boss will take charge of his new side for the first time in an EFL Trophy tie away at Leicester City on Tuesday night.
Daniels initially stepped up to lead Watford's senior side on a temporary basis in February following Javi Gracia's resignation. His two matches in charge ended in a 0-0 draw at Hull City and a 1-0 defeat at Southampton, before he returned to his role within Ed Still's coaching staff for the remainder of the campaign. He had been with the Hornets since 2021, coaching the Under-18s and Under-21s before his brief first-team stint.
After departing Vicarage Road in the summer, Daniels held talks with several League One clubs about a head coach position, most recently missing out on the Oxford United job to Aaron Ramsey. His move to Craven Cottage represents a swift return to a development role at a top-flight club.
"I’m really excited to be joining Fulham," Daniels said. "This is a club with a fantastic reputation for developing young players and providing a pathway into first-team football." He added that he is looking forward to getting straight to work with a game so soon on the schedule.
Daniels' departure coincides with a challenging period for Watford's first team, which sits 20th in the Championship with eight points from eight games. Their recent form shows just one win in the last five outings, a sequence that includes consecutive losses to Bristol City and Stoke City. The club's next chance to improve their standings position comes at home to Burnley on 10 October. Fans can track the team's progress and view the full fixtures list on the club's official channels.
